MMSD Social Studies Standards Met:

·      History: Children will get a brief history of the Hmong people from a guest speaker and how some Hmong ended up in Madison

·      Behavioral Science: Students will be exploring celebrations as it relates to culture.  Students will recognizing commonalities and differences between their celebrations, that of their classmates and that of the Hmong at Hmong new Year. 


School of Education Standards Met:

·      Standard 5: Explain and Justifies Education Choices: Focusing on the cultures represented in our classroom and expecting respect and value placed on all cultures

·      Standard 6: Connects School and Community: Discussing children’s home lives in relation to the unit, collaborating with school staff, children’s families and children within the school

·      Standard 7: Understands and Adapts to Multiple Forms of Communication: Large group discussion, pairs and one-on-one, vocal and written assessment

·      Standard 8: Employs Varied Assessment Process: informally listening to full group share outs, pair discussion and one-on-one time, can look at students writing notebook as well

·      Standard 10: Employs varied Instructional Strategies: will gain insight from teacher, other adults from school, home, and other students in the school.  Playing pov pob allows students kinesthetic students a chance to be active while exploring another culture


NCSS Standards Met:

·      Culture: students are exploring the idea of culture, their own and others

·      Time, Continuity, and Change: A brief history of the Hmong people and how many came to America, the practices that have continued and some that have changed to meet the new environment

·      People, Places and Environment: Students will be identifying different cultures from different countries, how their histories and settings impact their culture

·      Global connections: A lot of our culture comes from that of our ancestors from different countries and is still practiced today in a different setting


Essential Questions:

·      What are commonalities in celebrations?

·      Why do people celebrate?
 

Materials Needed:

·      Filled in celebrations interview sheet (created by Carolyn Konkol)


   o    File attached at bottom of page, would also have them translated into Spanish

·      White Paper for students

·      Crayons, markers, or colored pencils Guests

·      Spiced mango

·      Balls

·      Chart paper and markers

·      Hmong music

·      Pencils

·      Book templates


Objectives:

·      Students will be able to identify celebrations in their home

·      Students will be able to identify common aspects of celebrations (ie: dance, music…)

·      Students will be respectful and willing to learn about celebrations outside of those familiar to them


Lesson Context:

Students have taken home a sheet informing their guardians that there will be interview sheets brought home with the student on a regular basis and they are to help their children answer these questions to the best of their ability.


Lesson Opening:

Day 1:

·      Students take home their celebrations interview sheets, they are to try and get responses for all the questions if possible.  They are NOT to draw the picture yet.

   o   The sheets are to be filled in with a guardian and brought back to school.

·      Tell the students that there will be special guests joining our class for part of the day.  They are going to help us learn about a celebration from a specific culture.

   o   Go over respectful behavior for guests

·      Students are to take out their celebrations interview sheet.  They are to read over what they, or their guardian, wrote.  They will get a new full sheet of paper in which they are to draw their favorite celebration memory.

·      Once the students are finished with their drawing they are to find a buddy and share their drawing and the information they received from their interview.


Procedures:

·      The children will gather on the carpet with both sheets. 

·      Children who want to share out their drawing or something from their sheet full group may

·      Chart the students’ celebrations- How many people drew a picture of them at a birthday party, Christmas, Hmong New Year…, Compile a list of things the do at these celebrations (dance, sing, eat…)

   o   Lots of us celebrate the same things and do the same things at our celebrations!

·      Tell them they will be learning about a Hmong celebration, Hmong New Year

·      Have the guests introduce themselves(hopefully older Hmong students from the school, Hmong guardians, any Hmong staff…)

   o   In advance ask one of the speakers to give a brief overview of the Hmong’s history at the beginning on the talk

   o   Ask speakers to bring in any pictures they have at Hmong New Year for a visual and tactile aid

   o   Ask if any speaker is willing to dress in traditional clothing for the presentation

   o   Remind speakers in advance to give children ample wait time as coming up with questions pertaining to a different culture may be difficult for them

·      Give time for each speaker to address Hmong New Year

·      Ask for questions from the students

   o   Prompt them to look at their interviews for ideas, and to use the chart of what they do at celebrations to come up with questions.

·      Thank the guests for coming

Day 2:

·      Ask children to gather on the carpet

·      Give the students hot pepper mango for snack

   o   Does anyone remember a celebration where spiced mango is a common food?

   o   Do you eat any special foods when you are celebrating something?

·      Review some things people do to celebrate Hmong New Year

   o   Record ideas on chart paper

·      Tell the students you have a surprise for them outside but they’ll need a buddy for it- assign buddies

·      Bring the students outside and show them the pov pob you’ve set up for them.

·      Remind them of the history of the game, getting to know a potential life partner, not trying to hit or hurt their buddy

   o   Ask if anyone who has played pov pob before is willing to demonstrate for the class

·      Ask the students to line up across from their partner and allow them to play for around ten minutes

o   You may need to remind students that it should be a gentle throw and to keep talking with your partner- prompt them to share their what they do at celebrations

·      Collect the equipment and bring the class inside

·      Sit full group and discuss the pov pob experience

   o   Did you like it? Did you learn anything about your partner? Did you think it was relaxing? Did time go by fast…

Closing:

·      Tell the students they are going to write and illustrate a book about a celebration they’ve been to.  Read aloud your book on Hmong New Year.  Pages should include good foods, fun games, nice people, beautiful clothes… (reviewing the information they’ve been presented with)

   o   Play Hmong music, traditional and modern as they write their stories

   o   Writing their stories may take a couple days

    §  The second day you can review before writer’s workshop by filling in their passport page to Laos, Vietnam, and China and write thank you notes to guest speakers

                         ·      Review the brief history given by the speakers


Assessment:

·      Students will be able to identify celebrations in their home

   o   They’ll be able to share information collected from their interviews with a peer and or full class

   o   Look for students who can explain their drawings and it corresponds to some responses on their interview sheet

·      Students will be able to identify common aspects of celebrations (ie: dance, music…)

   o   Listen during full group share out who is responding

   o   During writer’s workshop speak to quiet students one-on-one who may not want to share out full group

   o   Look at their writer’s workshop notebooks to see if they are incorporating how their celebration uses dance or music…

   o   During pov pob if groups are taking about their celebrations listen for children recognizing commonalities

·      Students will be respectful and willing to learn about celebrations outside of those familiar to them

   o   Listen for participation

   o   Respectful behavior and comments during guests

   o   Willingness to try pov pob and mango

   o   Eagerness to share and listen about others’ celebrations

   o   The content on the children's thank you cards
