What is Culture?
This unit focuses on studying cultures. Our classroom’s ethnicities will dictate the cultures we study. Each component of culture we study (ie: music, clothing, language…) will correspond with an ethnicity represented in our classroom. For this unit I focused on Hmong culture but the lessons can serve as a template to explore any culture. I included an introduction lesson, two lessons on cultural components and two closing lessons. Understanding the culture of our students is essential in bridging the cultural gap between home and school. In this unit the children will explore their own cultures as well as those of their peers. In the closing lessons the children will analyze the culture of their school and delve deeper in researching a culture of their choice.
